Course Series
Preceding each bagua seminar (Saturday and Sunday), Paul will teach two evenings (Thursday and Friday) on qigong.
- 19-20 January | Dragon + Tiger Medical Qigong Energetics
- 9-10 August | Heaven + Earth Qigong Energetics
Heaven + Earth Qigong consists of a single external movement that stretches all the muscles, tendons, ligaments and fascia, opening your body from the inside out. In the work of Heaven + Earth Qigong, the pulse (open and close) is also initiated, which can then be applied in bagua to potentially gain maximum benefit from your walking meditation practice. Learn more about qigong courses in Brighton by clicking here.
You have the option to register for the entire series (Thursday-Sunday) below or each seminar (qigong or bagua) individually, as you like.

Using the Energy of Wind to Contact Your Chi + Balance Your Nervous System
The aim of this seminar is to teach the fundamental practices and energetic development associated with the Third (Wind) Palm Change. Beginners will focus on the physical mechanics and experienced practitioners will focus on energetic development, but there will be plenty of overlap between the groups.
The Third Palm Change is the first palm where the energies of yin and yang mix and is therefore sometimes referred to as the “Continuous Palm Change.” Wind, as in nature, is continuous—without any particular beginning or end.
Third Palm’s specialties include moving aside the weak and moving around the strong. Martially, Wind enables the practitioner to avoid as well as engage with an opponent.
Advanced Dragon + Tiger Level 2 + Level 3 energetics practitioners will imbue their forms with specific and strong energetic flows using material presented during the previous evenings courses on Dragon + Tiger Qigong. Once this work is well underway, the groups will work backwards, applying energetics to the Single Palm Change.
Beginners will learn the physical mechanics of the Third Palm Change including layers of essential internal content, such as:
- Bending-stretching and twisting the soft tissues
- Opening-closing (pulsing) the joints
- Bagua’s power-generating techniques while Walking the Circle
- How to begin generating chi in bagua.
The Dragon + Tiger Qigong evenings that precede this course will be especially helpful in the preset to manifesting Wind in your bagua practice. Learn more by clicking here.
Earth + Thunder Elements in Bagua Zhang
Cultivating Energetic Qualities in Double + Fourth Palm Changes
Saturday + Sunday, 11-12 August 2012
Everyone is welcome:
Group 1—Bagua Thunder Palm Change
- Beginners will learn the fundamentals of Circle Walking and Bagua's Fourth Palm Change. Come and give bagua a try!
Group 2—Bagua Double Palm Change Upgrade + the Fourth Palm Change
- Experienced bagua practitioners will train neigong components that drive and ultimately manifest the spherical form intrinsic to Bagua's Double and Fourth Palm Changes.
Following on from the last course on bagua palm changes, Paul will teach energetic development methods through the Fourth Palm Change since the energy of Thunder naturally arises from Wind. Although Thunder is well-known for its explosive nature, its predominate disposition is yin.
Even still, Thunder’s specialty is the sudden release of power, allowing the practitioner who harnesses it to crack through and dredge out that which binds and restricts us in body-mind-chi. Martially, the energy of Thunder can be devastating because it allows the practitioner to deliver several blows in quick succession with deep penetration.
Paul will teach the choreography of the Fourth Palm Change including techniques for:
- Deep twisting to open up the body’s soft tissues.
- Powerful opening-closing (pulsing).
- Spherical development of energy.
Experienced bagua practitioners—once you have sufficiently learned or reviewed fundamentals of Bagua’s Fourth Palm, you will again work backwards to train the spherical work within the Double Palm; specifically, how to maintain the sphere while working with amorphous energy.
Paul highly recommends attending either one or both of the previous qigong evening courses (click here for details) since energetics will be taught in qigong classes and applied in the Fourth Palm. This course will be all about bagua applications, so there will be very little review from the perspective of qigong alone.
Beginners will focus on the choreography and fundamental content of the Fourth Palm Change to generate internal power for health and martial applications (optional). Before moving into the realm of twisting, pulsing and circularity, you will start by learning the basics, such as:
- Footwork and coordinated arm movements with stepping patterns.
- General orientation as you Walk the Circle and change direction.
- Body alignments throughout the form.
Regular Students: Please note that this course is taking place at Hanover.
